TRINITY MOTHER FRANCES AND TEXAS ONCOLOGY-TYLER AMONG THE FIRST IN U.S. TO BOAST NEW CANCER-FIGHTING TECHNOLOGY
Multimillion-dollar investment in state-of-the-art radiation technology improves cancer care for patients in Texas
TYLER, Texas July 2008 /PRNewswire/—Patients of Trinity Mother Frances Neuroscience Institute and Texas Oncology-Tyler are among the first in the nation to have access to state-of-the-art radiation equipment that provides faster and more accurate treatment for a wide variety of cancers.
Trinity Mother Frances and Texas Oncology-Tyler are among of the first facilities in the United States to acquire the technology, the Novalis Tx™ stereotactic radiosurgery system. Novalis Tx is a powerful radiosurgery and radiotherapy system that penetrates deeper - and faster - into the body to treat tumors considered inoperable. The system's platform also allows for intricately customized settings that enable treatments to be highly targeted and accurate. The technology is brought to Tyler as a joint venture between Trinity Mother Frances and US Oncology. Texas Oncology is part of the US Oncology network, which provided Texas Oncology-Tyler with the multimillion-dollar capital investment in the Novalis Tx equipment. The agreement with Trinity Mother Frances allows the hospital's neurosurgeon to work hand in hand with radiation oncologists from Texas Oncology.
"This technology is some of the best of its kind available in the world today," said Sabatino Bianco, MD, Trinity Mother Frances Neuroscience Institute Director and Chief of Neurosurgery. "The commitment Trinity Mother Frances has made by partnering with Texas Oncology-Tyler to buy this equipment is another example of the organization's ongoing effort to provide the best patient care possible."
Dr. Mark Saunders, a radiation oncologist with Texas Oncology-Tyler, said the system has been installed and patients began to receive treatments using the new technology on July 10. "We're thrilled that we will be among the first in the nation to offer our patients this improved technology," said Saunders. "It allows us to deliver highly accurate radiation to both malignant and benign tumors as well as treat functional disorders. This technology is so powerful that it can deliver the appropriate dose faster than most conventional systems allowing for more ease and convenience to the patient."
Cancers that will be treated by the system include those within the head; neck and brain; pancreas; liver; prostate; and lungs. Because the system is so accurate, nearby healthy tissue is protected from damaging radiation so larger doses of radiation can be delivered to the targeted tumor with each treatment.
The Novalis Tx offers physicians more flexibility in utilizing framed or frameless treatments as well as offering both cone-based and multi-leaf technology. Most patients will find their treatments take significantly less time with Novalis Tx than if they were treated using previous-generation technology. This translates to the best technology available today. Patients receive complete, personalized cancer care at Texas Oncology-Tyler and Trinity Mother Frances Neuroscience Institute, which team together to offer today's most advanced technologies and treatments, as well as a wide range of supportive services and programs to address patients' individual educational, psychological, emotional, financial and nutritional needs.

About Novalis Tx
Novalis Tx, from Varian Medical Systems and BrainLAB, offers one of the most versatile treatment platforms available for radiosurgery and radiotherapy-from frameless and frame-based treatment of cranial indications to extra-cranial treatment of spine, lung, liver, and prostate lesions.
Novalis Tx offers the most comprehensive set of image-guidance and verification capabilities. With three imaging systems that provide clinicians with detailed information about the shape, size, and position of the targeted lesion; guide patient set up and positioning, and monitor patient motion during treatment, the Novalis Tx far eclipses image-guidance capabilities of SRS systems with only one image-guidance technology. Adaptive gating technologies allow precise treatment of tumors that move with respiration, while avoiding critical tissues and organs near the targeted area.
