School Awards "MVP" Status to Military Veterans
Johnstown, PA. July 15, 2009 /PRNewswire/— The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown is expanding its outreach to military veterans through its new MountainCat Veterans Program (MVP). The MVP has been created to assist veterans in making successful transitions to college students in a state that has the fourth-largest population of veterans in the United States.
In announcing the program, Pitt-Johnstown President Jem Spectar offered, "We have tremendous respect and appreciation for our military veterans, who have given so selflessly of themselves in defending our freedom. We owe them an enormous debt of gratitude. Our MountainCat Veterans Program is one more way of saying 'thank you' to all of our military veterans."
Among the benefits offered to veterans are: accelerated admission review and application fee waivers, priority registration, deferred tuition payments, credit evaluation, a veterans' support group, free on-campus parking, and single point-of-contact in administrative and student services departments. MVP participants will be provided with special membership identification cards designating them as "Pitt-Johnstown MVP's."
MVP benefits will extend to featured areas of campus including the bookstore where they will receive special discounts on clothing, and the school's Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center where they will attend free performances. The school will also host an annual Veteran's Day celebration.
Through the University of Pittsburgh, Pitt-Johnstown is also a participant in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program.
The new MVP initiative derived its name from the school spirit signature battle cry "Mountain Cat Proud," which celebrates their mountain cat mascot. For more information, visit www.upj.pitt.edu/MVP.
