The Home Depot Launches “How-To” Community for Do-it-Yourself Enthusiasts

Store Experts Respond to Home Improvement Questions Online

ATLANTA, December 10, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — The Home Depot®, the world’s largest home improvement retailer, today announced the launch of its new online “How-To” Community community.homedepot.com where do-it-yourselfers can discuss home improvement projects and share their expertise with other members.

“A couple days each week I work on Home Depot’s How-To Community instead of going to my store,” said Ingar, a 14-year Home Depot store associate in Atlanta. Ingar is his store’s horticulturist and is known as “greengiant” on community.homedepot.com. “I use new tools and a video camera to connect with customers from all over the country. We end up talking about a lot of the same projects that we’re discussing in my store, but since we’re online other customers are able to join in and offer their perspective.”

The How-To Community features a number of tenured Home Depot store associates from around the country who are ready to help consumers tackle their home repair projects. They are trained and equipped with the latest multi-media technologies so they can bring their knowledge to life in ways that savvy consumers now expect.

“Our How-To Community is a gathering place for homeowners, professional contractors, product manufacturers and weekend DIYers to swap tips and share project knowledge,” said Brad Shaw, vice president of communications, The Home Depot. “In addition to the peer-to-peer support you’d expect in this type of community, we’ve selected and trained some of our most tenured store associates to serve as product experts on the site a couple of days each week. The other days, they are back in the store answering questions there. Our customers will find the same level of knowledge and support on this site that they receive in our stores.”

Members of the Home Depot How-To Community earn rank and status among their peers by participating in the site on a regular basis and offering their expertise to other users. Visitors to community.homedepot.com will find discussions organized in categories including Paint, Tools and Hardware, Garden and Yard and Do-it-Yourself and Repair.
