NEW ORLEANS TOUCHDOWN FOR HOMES

Story Summary

Louisiana home builders and former NFL players have teamed together to kick off a community redevelopment project that will bring homes and businesses back to the Lower Ninth Ward and help restore the area to the vibrant community it once was. Touchdown for Homes is a collaboration of the Louisiana Home Builders Association, the Greater New Orleans Home Builders Association, and the NFL Players Association New Orleans Former Players Chapter. During the first phase, three homes will be completed in time for the football championship in February, and made available to families who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The homes will be certified to the National Green Building Standard. A true community partnership, Touchdown for Homes is working in conjunction with the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority and Lower Ninth Ward citizens groups, and a Home Builders Institute workforce development curriculum will help New Orleans citizens and youth learn how to build up their community. Future plans include more homes, an open-air market, retail, and Early Childhood and Family Centers — all designed to create a stable and highly desirable neighborhood for families who want to call the Lower Ninth Ward home.
