Actor Dick Wilson (Aka Mr. Whipple) Dies At Age 91
Story Summary:Today Procter & Gamble sadly mourns the death of long-time Charmin pitchman, actor Dick Wilson. Wilson was known by millions of Americans as Mr. Whipple, the grocer who pleaded with his customers, "Please don't squeeze the Charmin." Wilson was first introduced to consumers as Mr. Whipple in 1964. He went on to star in more than 500 Charmin commercials during the next 20 years, making him the third most recognized person in America in 1978, just behind Billy Graham and Richard Nixon. In 1998, Wilson helped Charmin celebrate its 70th birthday by finally allowing consumers everywhere to "Squeeze the Charmin." Wilson also had numerous television and movie credits including appearances in "Planet of the Apes," and sitcoms like, "Maude," "Bewitched," and "The Partridge Family." The makers of Charmin bath tissue will make a contribution to the Kennedy Center for the performing arts in Wilson's name in honor of his love of the arts, culture and performance.
